Aluminium Oxide is a commonly used abrasive. In this application it is thus designed primarily to sharpen carbon steel. Including bench chisels, carving tools and plane irons etc.  However, it will also hone harder high speed steel tools. Aluminium Oxide’s longevity is also at the lower end of the abrasives that Robert Sorby use on its belts. These belts are also quite cheap. Therefore, representing excellent value choice.

For guidance purposes, the larger grit belts remove more material, whilst the finer grit belts are therefore designed for finishing.
